If You Had a Friend There(加藤友紀・日本語学科2年)

Hello everyone. I want you to tell you about my email friend from Sri Lanka. I have never met her but I have been exchanging emails with her for about one year. She is fourteen years old. And my Japanese friend introduced her to me.

Let me explain the history of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is an island country which won independence from England in 1948. At that time it was called Ceylon. Then it became a republic and was renamed Sri Lanka. A civil war between the Government and an anti-government group broke out in 1987. Then they temporarily stopped fighting for some time in 2002.

But these days the battle is raging again. In her email, she sometimes writes about the civil war. She once wrote, “Day to day the civil war is getting worse. I don’t want to think about it.” And also, “now our country doesn’t have peace. We were O.K. and well today because we didn’t go out. But we are not sure about tomorrow.”

It disturbed me greatly. It was the first time that I experienced real war so closely. The fact that I might lose her made me even cry. But it was not because I was sad but because I was angry. I was angry with the people who fight. I wanted to shout at them, “Don’t take a peaceful life from my friend.” I have never wished for peace so strongly.

We all know that war and terrorism are continuing all over the world. Under the fear of violence, people just like you and me live there. What would you think if one of your precious people were one of them? I want you to watch carefully what is going on in this world from this point of view. It is not enough to find violence sad, we must detest it to make it end.
