Opportunities to Study Abroad through the Department of Japanese Studies

The Department of Japanese Studies at Nagoya University of Foreign Studies offers students several exciting opportunities to continue their study of English and other subjects at universities around the world. We strongly encourage our students to take advantage of these wonderful opportunities to take the challenge of living in another culture and experiencing it at first hand, and of studying a variety of interesting subjects in English. Many of our students do exactly that every year.

Students in the Department of Japanese Studies can participate in two different types of programs which provide this unique opportunity. Each year thirty or forty students from the department go overseas on a short-term study program. They spend three weeks studying English and culture at a foreign university, and enjoy the chance to become a part of an English-speaking family for three weeks. The students are able to enjoy many activities with their host families, including barbeques, boat trips, hiking, parties, and visits to the beach, but also have a chance to enjoy a wide range of cultural activities through the university, such as visits to local schools, sandboarding, dolphin watching, and a variety of water and other sports. The study program ends with a three day visit to a city of special significance, and several days full of culturally stimulating trips and activities.

A smaller group of students choose an even more challenging course: a full semester or full year abroad, in countries such as Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, or the United States. After a refresher course in English our students plunge into a full course load of classes in English, studying everything from Linguistics to American History to Australian Aboriginal Culture. Some have helped to teach Japanese language classes at their overseas university, and become fully integrated into the life of the university overseas. Sometimes the studies are hard, but they are always rewarding.
